Club Mead Obedience

Classes permantly cancelled.

Puppy Kindergarten classes are available for puppies 8 weeks to 4 months of age. Puppies will learn to sit, stay and get used to wearing a leash. These classes address puppy issues such as biting, jumping and crate training. We will discuss subjects like nutrition and the puppies will have a period of play time.

Beginner obedience is for puppies 4 months and older. No pre-requisite. This session is designed for all dog owners to address the necessary life skills required to be a good pet and family member. We will cover all the basic commands including heel, sit, stay, down and come. Dogs will learn proper manners including how to take a treat and waiting his turn to go through a doorway.

Novice obedience classes are designed for owners who want to increase their control or are interested in competing in obedience trials. We will add the commands stand, front and finish. Dogs will begin to learn to heel off-leash. Dogs need to have taken the Beginner class or equivalent.

Advanced obedience is designed for those who wish to compete or just want to continue to get better focus from their dog. There will be emphasis on control exercises such as off leash heeling and out of sight stays. We will work on correct handling techniques for the ring. Dogs will also be introduced to the "open" exercises such as drop on recall, broad and high jump. Dogs need to have taken the Novice class or equivalent.

Competitive obedience sessions are for students who are preparing to enter a novice or open class at an obedience trial.

Agility is fast becoming a major interest in the  Edmonton area right now!

The sport of Agility is one of the most fun and exciting activities you can enjoy with your dog. It originated as a spectator event in Great Britain in 1978 and has developed a world wide appeal since. Basically, Agility is like a trip to a 'puppy playground' for your dog, and can be done for recreation or competition. It involves navigating a course of obstacles with accuracy and speed. The dogs race through tunnels and chutes, scale a 6 foot A-frame, traverse a narrow plank, zigzag through weave poles, walk over a teeter totter, and jump through tires. Agility develops a closer relationship and communication between owner and dog through working as a team. It builds confidence and adds interest to an otherwise mundane training schedule.  The sport is enjoyed by all breeds and not limited to purebreds. The thrill of the sport is contagious and the teams are spurred on by the enthusiasm of the crowd.

We offer sessions and instruction for those interested in getting into this exciting sport!

p.s.- It's a great way to get lot's of exercise for yourself too!!!

Basic agility will introduce the different pieces of equipment and start to put the obstacles together in short sequences. We will teach the dogs to work from both sides of the handler.

Intermediate agility will focus on body positioning of the handler. We will put together simple courses and introduce drills to teach the dog to work at a distance.
